Most Of 2013

Most Memoirable

2013. The year of many new things. Many trends started up, many great people died, many new things were thrown into American life. But the most memoirable, by far, is the passing of Nelson Mandela. Mandela was an amazing leader who shook the entire country. He endured 27 years in prison for the freedom of his people. He fought long and hard. His great leadership and the things he has done were great. As one person he worked for almost his whole life for equality. His death was mourned everywhere. from every part of the planet. He was a great leader and deserved all the attentionhe got. He may have died physically, but he will not be forgoten.

How I Feel

I believe Nelson Mandela was a great man. An article on History.com says that. "The South African activist and former president Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) helped bring an end to apartheid and has been a global advocate for human rights. A member of the African National Congress party beginning in the 1940s, he was a leader of both peaceful protests and armed resistance against the white minority’s oppressive regime in a racially divided South Africa. His actions landed him in prison for nearly three decades and made him the face of the antiapartheid movement both within his country and internationally. Released in 1990, he participated in the eradication of apartheid and in 1994 became the first black president of South Africa, forming a multiethnic government to oversee the country’s transition. after retiring from politics in 1999, he remained a devoted champion for peace and social justice in his own nation and around the world until his death in 2013 at the age of 95." This proves that he is a great man and that he is very dedicated.

T op Ten Quotes

1. "Difficulties break some men but make others. No axe is sharp enough to cut the soul of a sinner who keeps on trying, one armed with the hope that he will rise even in the end."
2. "It always seems impossible until it's done."
3. "If I had my time over I would do the same again. So would any man who dares call himself a man."
4. "I like friends who have independent minds because they tend to make you see problems from all angles."
5. "Real leaders must be ready to sacrifice all for the freedom of their people."
6. "A fundamental concern for others in our individual and community lives would go a long way in making the world the better place we so passionately dreamt of."
7. "Everyone can rise above their circumstances and achieve success if they are dedicated to and passionate about what they do."
8. "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."
9."I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear."

Frozen Gas?

Frozen CO2

When you hear ice you probably think of frozen water. That's not all. Gas can be an ice to. Take dry ice as an example. CO2 can be frozen at -110 degrees fahrenheit to make dry ice. This is a very cold substance that should not be handled with bare hands because it is VERY cold and can lead to instant frostbite. You should use gloves or tongs to touch this. When dry ice is heated up, it does not turn to liquid. This is a frozen gas so dry ice when heated up automatically turns to gas and disappears. this particular gas is the gas we breath out.

What I Think

I think that this is a very fun, cool, and useful thing. According to Wonderopolis "The scientific process of changing directly from a solid to a gas is called sublimation. One pound of dry ice will produce about 250 liters of carbon dioxide gas through sublimation. That’s enough gas to fill 125 2-liter bottles!
Dry ice has many uses. Because of its cold temperature and the fact that it will not make a mess when it “melts,” dry ice is often used to preserve frozen foods when refrigerators are unavailable or impractical. It can also be used to flash freeze foods.
When dry ice is put in water, the sublimation process gets faster, creating dense clouds of smoke-like fog. Fog machines, theaters, haunted houses and nightclubs regularly use dry ice to create dense fog effects."

Top Ten Most Interesting Facts About Dry Ice

1. Freezes at -110 degrees fahrenheit.
2. It's frozen CO2.
3. turns straight into gas.

5. Dry ice has been found in space and on planets.
6. Discovered by Charles Thilorier.
7. If you put dry ice in your freezer it will deactivate it.
8. Used to make fog affects.
9. Can keep food cold for a long time.
10. Can be used to keep cell tissues.

Black Friday

INTRO

Black Friday is a time of long lines and cheap deals. Where people are running to the stores to be first for the cheap deals. Why Black Friday though? It is the day after Thanksgiving and made for Christmas shopping. Stores take their best things and put them on sale. The reason it is called Black Friday is becuse in business, red marks are used to show falls in the amount of money they make. Black marks are used to show profits and on Black Friday they make profits, so it is called Black Friday. At the end of the year when people line up early in the morning to get ready to buy things, businesses are making profits from all the shoppers so thats good.

My Opinion

I think Black Friday is a good idea because not only do people get cheap things but businesses startto make a greater profit too. According to Wonderopolis "Regardless of when a retailer turns a profit for the year, it’s clear that Black Friday is a very important day for most retailers. Some retailers are indeed dependent on holiday shopping to turn a profit for the year. For others, it’s a day when they definitely make bigger-than-usual profits — and that’s a lot of black ink!" This shows that Black Friday is not one sided. It is a win win situation. The shoppers and store owners both win.

Baseball Blasts

Metal or Wood

Which hits farther?

Wooden bats were the primary at first. So why do most little leaguers use metal bats? The answer is simple, faster and harder. Metal bats are lighter so they hit more powerfully. They have another perk, it's called the “trampoline effect.” It is called this becaus the metal bats actually act kind of like a trampoline. It is a confusing concept but if you put it simply it makes your swing harder. The questionis why do high school and up leagues use wooden bats? It is for safety, because they hit very hard already so if they used metal bats it would be very dangerous.

Which would I use?

That depends, according to the Wonderopolis artical about which hits harder "Wooden bats come in a variety of types of wood, including hickory (strong, but heavy), white ash (arguably still the most popular wood of choice) and maple (increasing in popularity since Barry Bonds hit 73 home runs in 2001 with maple bats). Metal bats, first made with aluminum, now feature a variety of space-age alloys and unique features. A top-quality metal bat can cost more than $300 today!" So wood are still popular. I would probably prefer a wood bat. It is more natural and some woods are very light. It says that maple bats are growing in popularity and I have read that maple bats are very good. The metal might have the perks, but the orignal wood will continue to live. It was here since tthe beginning of baseball, and tradition will stay. Also wood are safer which will stick.

Blast Off Ending

In conclusion metal are better but wood are safer. Which would you prefer? Tell me in the comments. You must also have a reason. Until the next wonder, Goodbye.

Commercial Free

Commercial Happy

This commercial is funny. Therefore, this commercial uses emotional appeal. Emotional appeal is a type of propaganda, propaganda is media that uses carefully-crafted messages to manipulate a person's actions or beliefs. An example of emotional appeal is a Iphone commercial about face time with people laughing. It is emotional appeal because it makes you feel happy. This is effective because when people see this they don't use common sense.

This commercial uses celebrity endorsement. Celebrity endorsement is getting celebrities to make something seem like it is a great product. This commercial uses it because it is using Rafa Nadal and Christiano Ronaldo to make this product seem better. Another example is Beyonce starring in a Pepsi commercial. This can also be people who are trained in these things, like a doctor in a Oral B commercial. This is effective because people probably want to be like celebrities.

Opinion

I like this type of propaganda because it makes you feel emotional. Happy, sad, surprised any of those things. This strategy works because it makes people use emotions instead of logic, so you don't think about the bad things. Therefore, this is bias. The target audience for commercial one is probably for adults because it has to do with insurance. I think this will make some money because it is funny but it doesn't give you evidence or support. For a commercial to make money I think it has to have evidence and good support, also to have some humor.
I like this commercial because the propaganda works. I wish I could do something like that. This strategy works because people want to be like the celebrity so they buy the product. This is useful because in this age being popular is the main goal. The target audience is probably teenagers because parents probably wouldn't be looking to by Nike soccer shoes. I believe this will make money. It is a good commercial that is well made, and it has good propaganda with the celebrity endorsement.

Clay King

That's a big army

The army of Qin Shi Huang.
One mans tomb, another mans weaponry. I guess you could say that about Qin Shi Huang tomb. It was filled with over 7,000 clay figures of humans, each with a different hair style, face, and different paint. This cruel emperor had them built to guard his tomb, each holding a steel weapon. Among these statues were archers, swordsman, horses, charioteers, and even dancers to keep him company in the after life. After his death, rebels attacked his tomb and stole the figures weapons to destroy the tomb. The only thing was that the HUGE mausoleum was not there, it was off to a side of the chamber safe and sound. Scientists believe that to this day, there are 160 unexplored chambers.

Bad or Good

Well if I lived under his rein I'd be in Europe. This cruel merciless emperor, according to Wikipedia " Qin Shi Huang ordered most existing books to be burned with the exception of those on astrology, agriculture, medicine, divination, and the history of the State of Qin. This would also serve the purpose of furthering the ongoing reformation of the writing system by removing examples of obsolete scripts. Owning the Book of Songs or the Classic of History was to be punished especially severely. According to the later Records of the Grand Historian, the following year Qin Shi Huang had some 460 scholars buried alive for owning the forbidden books." For a thing like owning certain books he would burn you, I wouldn't like to live there. I have heard of many other cruel things this emperor has done. Such as making his wives and servants drink poison to knock them out and then burring them alive with him when he died.

Top Ten Facts About The Terracotta Army

1.There are over 7,000 figures.
2.Scientists believe there are over 160 unexplored chambers.
3.It took 36 years to build.
4.It was made to protect one of the biggest mausoleums in the world.
5.It is over 2,200 years old.
6.Each face is unique.
7.The height and uniform of each warrior depends on the rank.
8.There were over 650 horses in the terracotta army.
9.The warriors held real weapons.
10.It took over 700,000 workers to build.

Conclusion

Was he a good emperor? You decide, tell me in the comments but bring facts. Read about him and tell me

Good or Bad!!

KILLER CROC

       A T-REX'S NIGHTMARE

You might think Super Croc (Aka sarcosuchus imperator) is some old croc that does what crocs do. If so, you would be saying a 40 ft. crocodile that weighs about 8 metric tons does what normal crocodiles do. No, they could eat anything they wanted. They had 132 strong teeth in there head that is bigger in the front than the middle. Their head was designed  for a top notch predator to take out any prey. As this thing ripped through T-rexs it would drag it into the water and drown it to eat it. This way of eating was very useful because most of its prey could not breath under water. This useful way of eating probably helped the super croc hunting, so it made it even stronger.
According to National Geographic "More than a hundred teeth jut from narrow jaws that must have been adept at snagging fish. And unlike any other croc, living or extinct, Super Croc's skull gets wider toward the front end, which is armed with a deadly row of enlarged incisors. These robust bone-crushers suggest that Sarcosuchus could eat far meatier prey than fish." This shows that this monster of a thing was ready to eat anything that got in its way, no such thing as safety for anything. This giant probably had a huge bite force to match its size. When it ate huge dinosaurs, it most likely could have snapped their bones like twigs. in the graphic above it shows it compared to other crocodiles, and it probabley could have eaten any of them.

4.Rat croc: Just like a rat. Small and forages for worms and other things
5.Duck croc: Senior big bill, and one awkward walk.

3.Speed is key. This is one croc that's going on the swim team, but not only that it also runs fast.
4.Size can be a predators biggest advantage, and this 40 foot long croc is huge. Don't forget, it ate T-Rexs.
